As part of our learning, we embrace a phonics-based reading scheme called Read Write Inc, which enables all children to read at their own ability, allowing children to build their reading skills at a pace to suit them.
Every morning, all children in Reception and KS1 will engage in a Read Write Inc lesson, which promotes reading and formation of letters and words through a range of different activities, until they are ready to read independently and move onto our child-led Accelerated Reader scheme in year 2.
Reading should be pleasurable for all children and to support this, we ask that you read with your child every day, both to practise the skills they have acquired in their reading lessons, and reading for pleasure, in whatever form that may be.
In Reception, children will bring home flash cards with the five new sounds they have been learning each week, alongside the sounds they have already learnt previously for practice. Once confident, children will begin to blend sounds to read words and will then progress to bringing home a phonically decodable reading book.
In Year 1 and 2, children will bring home a phonically decodable reading book for adult supported practice at home.
Please ensure these resources are brought back into school every day to allow us to continue to support your child’s reading development seamlessly between home and school.
All children will also have access to a library of books, and class books known as bedtime reads, which while they may not be able to access the stories independently, should be enjoyed with an adult at home.
